2016 Silver BIM winning project
The AIA Life Designers multidisciplinary team designed the hospital centre as a shared and scalable medical platform, embodying the spirit of a hospital village which stages the uses and movements and can repress the constraints of functionalities AT the heart of the eight-hectare park, the 30,000 m² programme (hospitalisation, technical platform, consultation units, emergency services, cafeteria, etc.) is located as close as possible to nature.
The project depicts the new hospital centre in the bright colours of the island, with five residences dating from the 19th century, evoking the old sugar factory. They have been renovated to house the administrative offices and the social assistant(s), a place of worship and the cafeteria. Preserving the heritage also affects the conservation and use of the Lemarchand Canal, one of Reunion’s most brilliant achievements of the 18th century, to collect rainwater and run-off water.
The continuity of the route is reflected in the inviting features: scale relationships between inside and outside, ease and porosity, grading of thresholds and quality of identification, etc. The shaded central square is where the reception hall, the various wings of the establishment, the old residences and the park all converge. On the fourth level, a sixty-metre-long footbridge connects it with Reunion’s Public Mental Health Facility, already in existence on a hill overlooking the park. The broadly overhanging over-roof and the adjustable shade screens together protect from the sun and rain whilst taking advantage of draughts.
Beyond the programme, the area is designed to be inhabited, with the installation of comfortable, leisure and inclusive spaces. Nature and light omnipresent at the heart of living and working spaces create a serene, peaceful and reassuring ambience. It is a place where users, patients, visitors and hospital staff feel good, a place that encourages relaxation and concentration.
As yet unheard of in a hospital, the bioclimatic design lessens the use of active air conditioning to just four months of the year. The air flows through the project thanks to its East/West positioning, in the direction of the prevailing winds, and thanks to a system of patios and cleverly-arranged planted corridors, in conjunction with experts from the Eiffel Wind Tunnel and Jacques Gandemer. Renewable energies take pride of place with solar thermal collectors installed on the roof that produce domestic hot water. The landscaping, focusing on local species requiring little water, incorporates the functions of alternative rainwater management and biodiversity enhancement. The environmental and health impact of materials is reduced for all interior coatings and paints.
