Psychiatry unit, Nîmes
An extension of the landscape
The Psychiatry unit is located at the edge of the forest and the plain, at the doors of Nîmes, on the site of the University Hospital. It makes the most of the hollows resulting from the terraced hills. This position is ideal as the terrain is a perfect fit for the project. The configuration of the land reduced the need for earth-moving. The building’s curve is highlighted by the plinth’s dry-stone wall and the existing terraces. The architecture follows the terrain’s motions as well as the bank of a brook. The building recedes from the stream, and thus enables the grouping of the public and staff entrance. The treatment of their walls complements that of the main façade and seamlessly blends into its environment. The space is clearly delineated by the structure on one side and the brook on the other; the landscaping, combined with a subtle play on levels, allow for a clear perception of the different functions. The raw material used — wood and stone — reassures and soothes the residents. The different accommodation floors are distributed in a way that allows a differentiated care: from a state of crisis or agitation to support and psychological motivation.Client
